Some residents in the ancient Gudang area of Johor, southern Malaysia, have recently experienced physical discomfort due to suspected chemical contamination. The authorities decided that 13 schools in the country will suspend classes indefinitely from the 13th.

Johor, head of the Johor State Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee, said in a statement on the evening of the 12th that the Johor Disaster Management Committee has begun to coordinate the monitoring and resolution of suspected chemical waste pollution in a river in the Gudang area of Brazil.

The statement calls on local people to avoid entering the affected area and seek medical attention as soon as they feel eye pain, chest pain or difficulty breathing.

According to local media reports, more than 200 people were treated for physical discomfort on the 12th, many of whom were local students.

Brazil's Gudang has gathered a number of heavy industry companies such as petrochemicals. On the 7th of this month, the local government evacuated thousands of people because of illegal dumping of chemical waste.
